Commencement Ceremony

Four steps to start your journey towards Southwestern College Commencement celebrations:


Step 1 Student Petition

If you are planning to participate during 2016 Commencement Ceremony you will need to file an Evaluation Student Petition form for graduation online. Click here for more information.

Deadlines to Submit petitions:  

Fall Petition:              November 1st            

Spring Petition:         March 1st 
Summer Petition:      April 29th* - Deadline date for SU/16 candidates to participate in

Step 2 Commencement Ceremony Participation

Once you file your student petition for graduation, then you must go online and register for the Commencement Ceremony. To register to participate at Commencement Ceremony, use this link: Students will have the option to select a Southwestern College staff, faculty or administrator to present the student’s diploma at the commencement ceremony. Deadline to petition and participate for Commencement 2016 is April 29, 2016. 

Step 3 Purchasing Caps/Gowns

All students will be notified via email in April to attend “GradFest.” GradFest will be held at the Chula Vista campus, and Higher Education Centers bookstore. Please check back in February for dates and time.

May 3, 4, 5  Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday   9:30am-6pm @ the Chula Vista Campus Bookstore

All participating students are required to wear a black cap and gown during commencement, with the exception of the nursing program. The Southwestern College Bookstore will be selling cap, gown, hat and tassel for $38.75.

A professional photographer will be available at the Chula Vista campus Bookstore only. Come dressed to take a professional photograph or come with your friends for a group picture! No sitting fee.

The Bookstore will be selling other commencement items such as announcements, diploma frames, and unique gifts.

Step 4 Ceremony Instructions

All students report to SWC DeVore Stadium at 3:00 p.m., entrance will be through the side gate of DeVore Stadium adjacent to Lot J. The ceremony begins promptly at 4:00 p.m., please arrive in your cap and gown.

Check-in at the student table to receive your assigned seating. It is very important that you remain in your assigned seat throughout the ceremony.

When the procession begins your row monitor will guide you to your seat on the field, and prompt you when to rise and move toward the stage. Make sure to take your seating card with you! As you approach the stage, you will give your seating card to the Reader of Names to receive recognition as you cross.

Please refrain from cell phone use during the ceremony, and avoid bringing personal belongings. SWC will not be responsible for valuables left unattended.

The following items will not be allowed:

  • No balloons
  • No umbrellas
  • No air horns
  • No tailgating
  • No coolers
  • No drones
  • No alcohol, smoking, vaping

Any student suspected to be under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance will be subject to arrest and will be prohibited from participating in the ceremony.
