JAGS FALL TO CHAFFEY 39-20 IN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.  FINISH 8-2 AND BOWL BOUND.

The JAGS played a very frustrating game this past weekend coming up on the short end to a very talented Chaffey College team. The game had the JAGS slightly ahead at 7-6 with under two minutes to go in the half. We were intercepted on Chaffey’s 30 yard line. They had a a couple of explosive plays that led to a TD with 16 seconds remaining in the half. The Panthers out paced us in the second half as we scored twice and they scored four times. The JAGS will take on San Bernardino Valley College at Olympian HS Saturday in the “Patriotic Bowl”. Both teams are 8-2 on the season with the JAGS having beaten them in week 4.

OFFENSE:
Sophomore qualifier QB FRANK FOSTER (Valhalla HS) continued his outstanding performance in 2013 throwing for two TD’s and rushing for a third to lead all scorers. DeSan Waters (Grossmont HS) set the pace coming through in the clutch with catches over the middle.

DEFENSE:
On a night where we struggled, giving up explosion plays to the Chaffey RB and QB three players shined defensively: Sophomore VICENTE STAFFORD (Granite Hills HS), safety May grad DANIEL CASTRO (Sweetwater HS) and mid year All State LB KHAALID ABDULLAH (Mount Miguel HS).

SPECIAL TEAMS:
VANN SABAN (Helix Charter HS) and ANTHONY HERRERA (Madison HS) shared kickoff duties again. JUAN LUNA (Castle Park HS) had one shanked punt but also had two inside the 10 yard line.

It’s been a great year… let’s finish it with a win!

JAGS MOVE TO 8-1 WITH A WEEK 9 VICTORY OVER VICTOR VALLEY 31-30.  WITH THE WIN THE JAGS SECURE A POST SEASON BOWL APPEARANCE FOR SECOND STRAIGHT SEASON.

The JAGS took on the Victor Valley Rams this past weekend in Victorville. We fought off the long early drive along with poor field conditions to come away with a hard fought 31-30 victory. In a back and fourth game against a speedy VVC team we battled to the very end. With five starters out of the game we told the team before the game because of the missing players we had a built in excuse for a sub-par performance. We needed instead to focus on who was playing and to Find A Way to win the game no matter what the situation was. Even if we won by only ONE POINT… We did just that.

OFFENSE:
Sophomore qualifier QB FRANK FOSTER (Valhalla HS) opened the scoring for the JAGS with a 20yd TD run. FOSTER was 20 of 31 for 197 yds, and a TD. Freshman WR JASON GAINES (Christian HS) led all WR’s 11 catches for 153 yds and a TD. DeSean Waters (Grossmont HS) had 3 catches for 53 yds and scooped and scored on a fumble on the goal line for a rushing TD. Sophomore RB DOMINQUE CANEZ (Otay Ranch HS) came off the bench to provide a big spark on a key drive. The top OL performance was freshman right tackle RAY SAMUELS (Chula Vista HS) who graded out at 86%.

DEFENSE:
Defensively we were strong again with a solid effort. Freshman defensive end RAY CLAPPER (Chula Vista HS) had an outstanding game with three tackles for loss, three solo tackles and a QB hurry. KIMAN EDWARDS (West Branch HS / FL) was the key to defensive success. On numerous occasions EDWARDS was the only person between the ball carrier and the goal line. EDWARDS racked up six solo tackles, two tackles for loss and a big hit. Sophomore mid-year grad DAVID CLARK (Serra HS) had a key interception that led to a touchdown by WATTERS. CLARK also had three tackles and a pass breakup.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
VANN SABAN (Helix Charter HS) and ANTHONY HERRERA (Madison HS) shared kickoff duties. The two of them combined for three kickoff touchbacks. HERRERA made the key kick of the night with a 30 yard field goal which proved to be the winning margin.

JAGS MOVE TO 7-1 WITH A WEEK 8 VICTORY OVER MT. SAN JACINTO 42-6.  TRAVEL TO VICTOR VALLEY COLLEGE ON SATURDAY

Going into the MSJC game our defense was ranked #1 in Southern California for points allowed… coming out of the game we are now ranked #1 in the state (74 teams) for total defense. Our kickoff and punt return teams lead Southern California for return’s. Traveling to the inland community of Hemet for a 1:00 game was a big challenge but the JAGS were up to the task. The JAGS broke open a scoreless first quarter game by scoring 28 unanswered points in the second quarter to take command of the game. We lead our conference in TD’s, fewest points scored against us and turnover ratio.

OFFENSE:
Sophomore qualifier QB FRANK FOSTER (Valhalla HS) opened the scoring for the JAGS with a 20yd TD run. FOSTER was 20 of 31 for 197 yds, and a TD. The 44 yd TD strike was to sophomore WR qualifier KHARI KIMBROUGH (San Diego HS). DeSan Waters (Grossmont HS) had 5 catches for 63 yds and also threw a TD pass to sophomore slot WR RASHAD RIDLEY (San Diego HS). The top OL performance was sophomore left tackle KEVIN BOWEN (Helix Charter HS) who graded out at 95%.

DEFENSE:
The defense was AWESOME again. We were 35 seconds away from our third shutout in a row. The Eagles were GIANT on the offensive line but our defense was too fast for them as we forced them into minus total offensive yards for the game. DIVANUEL FLORES (OLYMPIAN HS) had his best night as a JAG with great performance including a third and fourth and 1 yard to go tackles. Sophomore VICENTE STAFFORD (Granite Hills HS) and fellow sophomore DAVID CLARK (Serra HS) both had great games in our secondary and CLARK was big on special teams.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
VANN SABAN (Helix Charter HS) once again stepped up big punting the ball well into the wind. Sophomore safety DANIEL CASTRO (Sweetwater HS) blocked a punt and recovered it for a TD.

JAGS BEAT COMPTON 42-0.  RECORD SECOND STRAIGHT SHUTOUT TO TAKE SEASON RECORD TO 6-1

Finishing week 7 of the season with a 6-1 record takes the JAGS into the final stretch of the season with the three toughest conference opponents. Taking it one step at a time, the JAGS will travel for the first of two one o’clock games heading out to San Jacinto College.

OFFENSE:
Sophomore qualifier QB FRANK FOSTER (Valhalla HS) played only the first half throwing for four TD’s (13 for 23… 106 yds). Sophomore WR qualifier KHARI KIMBROUGH (San Diego HS) led all WR’s with 7 receptions and a TD. Sophomore qualifier OG/OT ANDRES PEREZ (Bonita Vista HS) had his best game as a starter. Sophomore mid-year transfer RB CEDRICK AGYEMAN (Battle Field HS / VA) led all rushers with 86 yds on 8 carries.

DEFENSE:
The defense put together another strong performance with its second straight shutout. At the community college level shutouts are unheard of much less back to back. Sophomore safety May grad DANIEL CASTRO (Sweetwater HS) intercepted his fourth pass on the season (he has returned 3 for TD’s). Playing in a limited role sophomores mid-year All State LB KHAALID ABDULLAH (Mount Miguel HS) and May grad sophomore DT ALFONSO HAMPTON (Morse HS). Freshman LB CHRIS FARRELL (Valhalla HS) had two tackles for loss.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
VANN SABAN (Helix Charter HS) had a heck of a night… he snapped for punts, punted (not at the same time of course) held for two FG’s also kicked two extra points and kicked off. Quite a night…a team first player.

October 19, 2013
JAGS TAKE THE NEXT STEP, BEAT MESA COLLEGE… move to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in conference

The JAGS finished off the final step in winning the county football championship beating San Diego Mesa Saturday. Beating Palomar in week three and Grossmont the last time we played them in 2011 completes the cycle. With four games to play the JAGS have two more at home and two away. The race is on!

OFFENSE:
Sophomore QB FRANK FOSTER (Valhalla HS) returned to take the helm of the JAG offense. Foster scored on a QB sneak in the third quarter and drove the team to two other TD’s. Fellow sophomore RB DOMINIQUE CANEZ (Otay Ranch HS) also scored a rushing TD.

DEFENSE:
The defenses set the tone of the game with 9 sacks and 10 tackles for loss. Sophomore DB DANIEL CASTRO (Sweetwater HS) for the second week in the row ran an interception back for a TD. Sophomore DT ALFONSO HAMPTON (Morse HS, offered a full ride at Idaho University this past week) put consistent pressure on their QB and helped stuff the run game. All State LB KHAALID ABDULLAH (Mount Miguel HS) continues to impress. Sophomore qualifier DE JALAL YOUSOFZAI 6’1 235 lbs (Washington HS, AZ) had two more sacks to add last weeks two sacks. YOUSOFZAI has been offered at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Sam Houston State.

JAGS BEAT EAST LA COLLEGE...go to 4 - 1 overall and 2 - 0 in conference play in Week 5 win.

The JAGS pushed their season record to 4-1 going into the bye week with a “get out in front” type win over the visiting Huskies. Our defense set the tone early and often with constant pressure on the Husky QB eventually knocking him out of the game in the first quarter. The JAGS will enjoy a rest with no scheduled game this week. A great time to get healthy and work on fundamentals.

OFFENSE:
The JAG offensive story was all about freshman QB LUIS PEREZ (Otay Ranch HS) who started his first game replacing injured sophomore starter FRANK FOSTER (Valhalla HS). Starting his first game ever at QB all LUIS did was complete 21 of 32 pass for 248 yds and three TD’s. He also ran for a touchdown. He rose to the challenge taking numerous big hits as he released the ball. He stood in like a grizzled veteran and made the difference in the game. Sophomore qualifier, 6’4 WR KHARI KIMBROUGH (San Diego HS) again caught a touchdown pass (he has 5 TD catches in the last two games. Only three have been called back on penalties). Fellow sophomore qualifier 6’0 WR CAMERON LEE (Helix Charter HS) caught his second TD of the season and added another deep catch on top of the TD. Freshman DeSEAN WATERS (Grossmont HS) had six catches with three of the catches on third downs.

DEFENSE:
Sophomore 6’ free safety DANIEL CASTRO (Sweetwater HS) followed up a big week from last week with an interception return for an 80 yd TD just prior to the end of the first half. Returning first team All State LB KHAALID ABDULLAH (Mount Miguel HS) led all tacklers with 10 total tackles, two tackles for loss an two sacks including one for a safety. Sophomore qualifier DE JALAL YOUSOFZAI 6’1 235 lbs (Washington HS, AZ) had two more sacks to ad to his season total.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
Overall great total team special teams play continued to be the standard. Our kickoff team dominated East LA College’s kickoff return team stopping them inside the 20 yard line on numerous occasions. Freshman place kicker ANTHONY HERRERA (Madison HS) was a force on kickoff placement that assisted our coverage team. DIDEROT NEMORIN (Eastbay HS / FL) led all returners for the second week in a row.

vs SBVC

September 28, 2013
JAGS BEAT SAN BERNARDINO VALLEY....move to 3-1 on the season

The JAGS opened conference play with a win over previously unbeaten San Bernardino Valley College. In a football game that turned into a penalty flag throwing contest the JAGS persevered. A key to the win came in the second quarter when SBVC ran a “flea flicker” for a TD to bring the game to cut our lead to 13-10. The Valley side was fired up only to have the JAGS run a reverse on the kickoff return for a 97 yd touchdown. The play broke their momentum. We received the ball to open the second half and drove down for a TD. After that the game was never in question.

OFFENSE:

Sophomore RB CEDRICK AGYERMAN (Battlefield HS / Virginia) led the JAGS with 2 TD’s and 16 carries for 158 yds. The remainder of the offense was spread around sophomore QB FRANK FOSTER (Valhalla HS) who had two big runs, one of 55 yds for a TD. Sophomore WR KHARI KIMBROUGH (San Diego HS) caught 3 TD passes to score one (two were called back on penalties in the same drive). Freshman center MIKE KUHELELOA (Bonita Vista HS) moved over from the guard position and had his best game of the season. Freshman QB LUIS PEREZ (Otay Ranch HS) came off the bench in the third quarter to lead a scoring drive on a TD pass to Kimbrough.

DEFENSE:
Sophomore DE DANIEL CASTRO (Sweetwater HS) led the defense with an outstanding second half effort that consistently shut down the Valley College passing game. Sophomore DE JALAL YOUSOFZAI (Washington HS) put consistent pressure on their QB and helped stuff the run game.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
The play of the game was our 97 yard reverse on a kickoff return for a TD by freshman ANDRELL SNOWDEN (Olympian HS) took the handoff and changed the tempo of the game.

vs Palomar

September 21, 2013
JAGS BEAT PALOMAR 31 - 28.....move to 2 - 1 on the season

Beating Palomar for the first time in 25 years the 2013 JAGS showed a resilience not seen so far in 2013. After jumping out to a 14-0 lead and then a 21-14 half time lead the JAGS came back to take the lead for good with a game winning drive in the final 4 minutes of the game.

OFFENSE:
Sophomore OT LAFAELE PASELIO (Castle HS / HI) paced the offense for the third week in a row with dominating effort and performance at the right tackle position. Stepping out of the shadows to steal the show was freshman slot WR DESEAN WATERS (Grossmont HS). WATERS had 12 receptions on the night with several key 3rd down conversions and one 4th down conversion. Sophomore QB FRANK FOSTER (Valhalla HS) led the team with 3 TD passes and a rushing TD to clinch the game. Sophomore slot WR RASHAD RIDLEY (San Diego HS) had two TD catches and numerous Jet Sweep carries.

DEFENSE:
KHAALID ABDULLAH (Mount Miguel HS) was a major force with 12 tackles on the night. A physical player with great speed is a returning All State LB. Sophomore DB/WR MARCUS HARRIS (Birmingham HS / Los Angeles) intercepted two passes to bring his total to 7 over the past two seasons. A 6’3 corner with great leaping ability he made a key stop in the fourth quarter to stop a Palomar drive.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
We won the special teams battle with great effort on our kickoff coverage teams. Freshman RB DEVONTE LONDON (Auburndale HS / FL) had some big hits on kickoff coverage. CHRIS FARRELL (Valhalla HS) was once again the dominant player in lead tackles. VANN SABAN (Helix Charter HS) hit the game winning field goal as well as four PAT’s. JUAN LUNA (Castle Park HS) controlled their punt return team with great position punting.

vs LA ValleySeptember 14, 2013
JAGS FALL TO LA VALLEY COLLEGE, 28 - 23

JAGS fell behind on the first play from scrimmage 7-0 when the Monarchs went 80 yards on the opening play of the game. Despite numerous opportunities to score in the first half, the score at the end of the first half of play was 7-0 LA Valley.

SOUTHWESTERN came out to the locker room and took the opening possession straight down the field and scored to tie the game up. Midway in the second half we led 16-14. With under two minutes and the game on the line in the fourth quarter FRANK FOSTER (Valhalla HS) hit MARCUS HARRIS (Birmingham HS/LA) with a 55 yard TD pass to close the gap to 28-23 in favor of LAV. The JAGS recovered the on side kick but were called for an off sides penalty. There was a re-kick and it was called dual possession with the ball going to LAV. Over the course of the game we lost 3 battles for TD passes in the end zone… had a Field Goal blocked, missed a PAT with a bad snap, dropped an un countable number of passes got beat deep on two TD passes, gave up a long run for a TD and we lost by 5 points and still had a chance to win the game at the end.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES:

OFFENSE:
RB CEDRICK AYGEMAN (Battlefield HS/VA) leads all conference rushers. Offensive tackle LAFAELE PASELIO (Castle HS/HI) turned in his finest performance of his two year career here.

DEFENSE:
KAHAALID ABDULLAH (Mount Miguel HS) led all defenders.

vs West LA (9/17)

September 7, 2013
JAGS WIN GAME ONE OVER WEST LA  58-27 - MOVE TO 1 - 0

The JAGS opened the 2013 season with a strong performance against visiting West LA College. The defense set the tone early with constant pressure on the Wildcat’s QB. OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES:

OFFENSE:
The JAG offense is once again on top in the state statistically. With 637 yards in total offense and 111 offensive plays the offense looks like it is in mid season form. QB FRANK FOSTER (Valhalla HS) who was our back up QB last season took the position over and ran for two TD’s and passed for two as he started his first college game. Sophomore RB CEDRICK AGYERMAN (Battlefield HS / Virginia) led all rushers in our conference with 134 yards and a touchdown. CAMERON LEE (Helix Charter HS) added 103 yards in receiving.

August 13, 2013
The JAGS will open defense of the Mountain Conference & American Bowl Championship when camp opens August 15th. Consistency is a key to the 2013 SOUTHWESTERN football program. Coach Ed Carberry returns for his seventh season at SWC, we have our coaching staff that returns nearly in tact. This makes practice, game planning and game decision making easier and more effective. Our defensive coordinator Junior Monarrez begins his fourth season (11th overall at SWC) as our defensive coordinator. An outstanding teacher / communicator he will see a lot of familiar faces as our defense return numerous starters. The remainder of our staff is:

Offensive staff: Shayne Ganz OL, Karl Danielson OL, Pete Tauvela RB (recruiting coordinator), Brad Carter WR (university placement coordinator) and Drew Westling QB’s.

Defensive staff: Travis Crawford DB, Clyde Logan LB, Guy Richaduli DB, George Jackson DL and Jamil Reymore DL.

OFFENSE: After leading the state in offense in 2012 the JAGS face the task of replacing the entire offense many of whom have moved on to universities. The unquestioned leader of the offense is sophomore QB Frank Foster (Valhalla HS). Foster finished the 2012 season leading the offense for 4 TD drives in our Bowl win. He also led Southern California in pass completion percentage on the season. The backup QB spot is a battle between Nate Long (Mission Bay HS), Ricky Esteves (Chula Vista HS) and Luis Perez (Otay Lakes HS). Live scrimmage action will determine the backup and their in season playing time. RB Charles Westbrook (Coronado HS) finished the 2012 season as the American Bowl MVP with a 200 yard rushing performance. Three other RB’s are in hunt for playing time, Dominque Canez (Otay Ranch HS) Cedrick Agueman (Dodge City JC) and returner Junior Nemorin (East Bay HS / Tampa FL). Although the OL had 4 of 5 sophomores leave with scholarships we return a lot of experience. Andres Perez (Bonita Vista HS) is the top returner at RG. Perez has the size 6’3, 305 lbs had a great offseason and has the size, strength and grades to be a D1 offensive lineman. Lafaele Pasello (Castle HS / HI), Vince Salinas (Horizon HS) and Kevin Bowen (Helix Charter HS) will begin camp as the starters but the pads will tell who up front play in the games. Freshman giant Ram Samuels (Chula Vista HS) will press for playing time. Three freshmen will work in the mix at TE, John Boyd (Valhalla HS), Adam Aguon (Sweetwater HS) and Puletini Leuluso (Radford HS HI) have all shown great promise. The receiver position is deep and talented. Rashad Ridley (San Diego HS) and Cameron Lee (Helix Charter HS) have a lot of experience at the slot position. Both will be pushed by Kevin Mills (Valhalla HS) who had a big Alex Spanos All Star Game with two TD’s and a long run. Marcus Harris (Birmingham HS) and Jason Gaines (Christian HS) return from last season’s team. Harris had 5 interceptions in 2012 as he split time both ways. Khari Kimbrough (San Diego HS) has made the transition from QB to WR. Freshmen Chris Kelly (Clairemont HS) and David Eguiza (Eastlake HS) have shown good progress over the summer. There are numerous other WR’s that will have to make their move when the contact starts.

DEFENSE: Jeremy Burgos (Notre Dame HS / IL) the 2012 Mountain Conference Defensive Player of the Year returns as his LB spot as does Khaalid Abdullah (Mount Miguel HS) at the Mike LB. Abdullah was a unanimous first team All Conference and first team All State middle LB in 2012. Both have had incredible strength and size gains in the off season. Freshman LB Blake Wilson (Eastlake HS) has been impressive in the spring and summer. Among the 20 LB’s on the 2013 roster freshman Santana Leomiti (Olympian HS) and Nick Galatis (Clairemont HS) are both big hitters that were 100+ tacklers in high school. Everybody’s pre-season All American Alphonso Hampton (Morse HS) 6’5, 320 lbs. returns to anchor the interior of the defensive line. A giant with exceptional quickness, Hampton showed great promise as a freshman and is ready to reach his potential. Jalal Yousofzai (Washington HS / AZ) is the returning conference leader in sack’s. Richard Thorne (Mission Bay HS) is back for this third year with the JAGS and understands the defense. The secondary is a work in progress with this area having the lease amount of returning players. Sophomore Daniel Castro (Sweetwater HS) had a great spring in the weight room and on the field. Two other sophomores have performed well, Kiman Edwards (West Branch HS / CA) and David Clark (Serra HS). The competition will heat up during camp.

KICK TEAMS: With 20 LB’s on the roster the coverage teams should be outstanding. We enter the season with no proven kickers or punters on the squad. The place kickers are: freshman State Champion Anthony Herrera (Madison HS), Billy Bechtel (Otay Ranch HS) and Van Saban (Helix Charter HS). The punters are Juan Luna (Castle Park HS), Ryan Miguel (Bonita Vista HS) and Saban, Nemorin, Ridley, Lee and Agyeman are the leading return candidates.

June 25, 2013
FOOTBALL... YOU BET!

JAG FOOTBALL started phase two of the 2013 season this past Monday when 147 young men showed up for the first meeting of the summer. That number continued to rise over 160 as the week continued.

Our spring off season strength program developed by our defensive coordinator / strength coach Dionicio Monarrez produced fantastic results. The 2013 squad is certainly the strongest we have had at SOUTHWESTERN. The lifter of the spring had to be our returning All State DE MIKE MOLINA (Chula Vista HS). MOLINA Squated 525 lbs, Benched 370 lbs. and Hang Cleaned 350 lbs. Fellow sophomore RICHARD THORNE (Mission Bay HS) benched 400 lbs.

We will have one more max lift this summer with a chance for more records to be broken. The first weeks workouts went smooth. Our defense has 7 players returning with starting experience so they were a bit out in front of the offense in competitive periods. Sophomore safety DANIEL CASTRO (Sweetwater HS) has been all over the field including the 3 interceptions he had on Thursday. Freshman ROCKY FUGA (Helix Charter HS) was another bright spot during the first week.

Offensively sophomore QB FRANK FOSTER (Valhalla HS) has a complete knowledge of the offense and has a head start on the competition with extensive playing time last season. TOMMY PISTONE (Yuma Catholic / AZ Western College) looked the most ready to compete of the other QB's this week as they all are being force fed the offense. Returning American Bowl MVP CHARLES WESTBROOK (Coronado HS) is back and had a strong first week. DOMINIQUE CANEZ (Otay Ranch HS) had a great off season in the weight room and is pushing WESTBROOK. There are several talented freshmen that we will have to watch and see. WR's JASON GAINES (Christian HS), CAMERON LEE (Helix Charter HS), RASHAD RIDLEY (San Diego HS) and KHARI KIMBROUGH (San Diego HS) are in the returners rotation from spring.

The place kicking and punting duties are up for grabs with no returning players at those positions.

As the freshmen and new players gain a better understanding of the offense and defense the talented freshmen could unseat a returning player. We will be down to 100 players by the opening of fall football August 15.

Coronado, CA - The JAGS went to the NAVY SEAL base on Coronado for the second year in a row. The players, coaches & SEAL trainers are pictured. The players were coached in leadership & personal responsibility in the classroom followed by on base activity by getting Wet & Sandy jumping in the ocean and then rolling in the sand on the beach..

Seal Training @ Coronado

The drill instructors also drove the players hard through a small number of the Hell Week drills they are known for.

Four key points of emphasis on the day that the SEALS believe in:

1. Goal Setting... How do you eat an elephant... One Bite at a Time.  Have short measurable goals and
    celebrate your success

2. Visualization... See yourself successful in all endeavors.... A phrase used all day was "It pays to be a
     winner".

3. Stress Control... 4 second breath in... 4 second breath out. Take the time to collect yourself even in
    the most stressful times.

4. Positive Self Talk... Don't let negative thoughts creep into your mind... "I CAN and I WILL" is a great
    mantra to keep you going.
