Infielder Sonia Mazon is Honored This Week

SMSan Diego City badminton player Darby Duprat and Grossmont softball player Kelsey Townsend are the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Women’s Athletes of the Week.

Duprat, a Hoover High School product who previously played for UC San Diego’s highly-regarded club team, is the biggest reason’s City’s badminton team is unbeaten and a strong contender to win its fifth state team championship.  The Knights’ No. 1 player, Duprat ran her record to 10-0 in singles and doubles in a 20-1 victory over Grossmont.

Townsend, a sophomore pitcher from Mira Mesa, shut out Citrus and Southwestern, both by 4-0, as the Griffins moved into a tie for first.

Honorable mention went to softball players Megan Bartee (Palomar), Vivan Garcia (Mesa), Lisa Pena (San Diego City) and Sonia Mazon (Southwestern).

Bartee, a freshman from Lakeside High in Lake Elsinore, replaced the Comets’ injured starting shortstop and had an RBI single in a 6-2 win over Santa Ana, singled twice in a 2-1 loss to Mesa and went 3-for-3 with a home run in a 2-0 win vs. Southwestern as Palomar re-took first place by a half-game over Mesa and Grossmont.

Garcia, a sophomore center fielder from Mission Bay, singled in Mesa’s win over Palomar, and was 2-for-4 in a doubleheader sweep of Chaffey.
Pena, a sophomore pitcher / centerfielder from Clairemont, was 6-for-14 as City beat Imperial Valley,

Hancock and Antelope Valley and lost to Moopark and Cypress.

Mazon, went 4-for-9 with two doubles, four walks and three RBIs on Saturday as the Jaguars swept Rio Hondo 9-5 and 7-4 in a non-conference double-header.
