APThe Pacific Coast Athletic Conference has selected Mt. San Jacinto College golfer Wan Ling “Iris” Chung and Southwestern volleyball player Alejandra Puga as its Women’s Athletes of the Week for the week that ended Sunday.

Chung, a sophomore from Taipei, Taiwan, shot 74-73 – 147 over 36 holes at Alisol River Golf Club in Solvang to shock the field and win the individual title at the Southern California Regional. Chung had faced Palomar’s Sadye Busby, the Orange Empire Conference Player of the Year, nine times in conference play, with Busby outscoring her eight times and the two tying once. But, with the Southern California title on the line, Chung defeated Busby, the runner-up in the tournament, by three strokes.

Puga, a 5-foot-10 sophomore outside hitter/setter from San Ysidro High School, was second in the state in kills per set during the regular season with a 5.14 average, trailing only Mt. San Jacinto’s Taylor Kushner, a conference Athlete of the Week on Sept. 22.  Puga closed her season with 15 kills and 25 digs in a 3-0 loss to San Diego City.

Honorable mention went to Southwestern basketball player Gabby Robledo, Grossmont volleyball player Lauren Hays, San Diego City volleyball player Jacki Kreymborg and Mt. San Jacinto soccer player Dimitra Tsambasis.

Robledo, a 5-foot-9 sophomore from Olympian High School, took tournament MVP honors as the Jaguars opened their season with three straight victories to win the James Mulvehal Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Inn Mission Valley Tip-Off Tournament at San Diego Mesa College. She scored 18 points and also had seven rebounds, three assists and three steals as Southwestern downed Rio Hondo in the championship game 64-58.

Hays, a sophomore setter from Patrick Henry High School and San Diego State transfer who helped Grossmont battle to a tie with Mesa for the conference title, contributed 35 assists and three aces in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-18) season-ending victory over San Diego City. Earlier in the week she had six kills and 17 assists in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-8) win over Cuyamaca.

Kreymborg, a sophomore Libero from Franklin High in Sacramento who leads the conference in digs per set, had 23 digs in a 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-22) win over Palomar.

Tsambasis, a freshman midfielder from Great Oak High in Temecula, helped lead Mt. San Jacinto to its first-ever Southern California Regional playoff berth with 11 goals and 27 points. She had two goals as the Eagles knocked MiraCosta out of the title chase 32.
