CLThe Pacific Coast Athletic Conference has named San Diego Mesa College cross country runner Albert Gamez and Southwestern football player Cameron Lee as its Men’s Athlete of the Week for the week that ended Sunday.

Gamez, a sophomore from Mira Mesa High School, ran 4.0 miles in 20:16.88 as he finished third in the CCCAA State Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno. He helped boost Mesa to sixth place out of 27 teams in the meet, one place behind fellow PCAC member Southwestern in fifth place.  Gamez finished right behind Olympian teammate Steven Martinez, a sophomore from Otay Ranch High School who finished in second place with a 20:01.05. Martinez was PCAC Athlete of the Week for the week that ended Oct. 13 and couldn’t win the award a second time because of the conference’s no-repeat rule.

Lee, a 6-foot-0, 180-pound sophomore slot receiver from Helix Charter High School, was named MVP of the Patriotic Bowl at Olympian High School’s stadium after helping lead Southwestern to a 34-23 victory over San Bernardino Valley.  Lee had seven receptions of passes thrown by quarterback Frank Foster, including touchdown catches of 5, 19 and 29 yards. The Mountain Conference champion Jaguars completed the season 9-2.

Honorable mention went to Grossmont football player William Abt, who had received Athlete of the Week recognition for the week ending Sept. 8, and Imperial Valley basketball player Rishawn Brown.

Abt, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound freshman quarterback from the Northland High School in Houston, TX and a transfer from the University of Houston, completed 39 of 71 passes for 445 yards and four touchdowns as the Griffins lost a 64-33 shootout against Cerritos in the Southern California Bowl at Falcon Stadium in Norwalk.

Brown, a 5-foot-11 sophomore guard from Middleton High School in Middleton, CT and a transfer from Cochise (AZ) Community College, dropped in a free throw with one second remaining to give the Arabs a 67-66 upset over highly-regarded Ventura in the 19th Irvine Valley College Classic. Brown finished with 12 points and eight assists against the Pirates. He also scored 11 points in a 74-50 loss to Irvine Valley earlier in the tournament and had eight assists had 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds in a 90-78 loss to Santa Monica in the tournament’s consolation finals.
