Double Honors Received for Jaguars Men's Baseball & Basketball Teams

Southwestern College’s Frank Mello and Shawn Lathan are the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Men’s Athletes of the Week for the week that ended Sunday.

Mello, the Jaguars’ freshman designated hitter / infielder from West Hills High School, broke into the lineup following a season-opening loss to Antelope Valley and led Southwestern to three straight wins. He went 9-for-12 and drove in eight runs during the three victories.  Mello went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two walks as the Jaguars won 11-10 in 11 innings over Chaffey. He was 4-for-4 with three RBIs, a walk and a steal in an 8-7 win over Victor Valley in the first game of a doubleheader. In the second game, Mello went 2-for-3 and drove in a run in a 4-1 victory.



ShawnLathan, a 6-foot-5 freshman forward from Hoover High School, dumped in 33 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Southwestern over MiraCosta 70-65.
He also scored 14 points to tie for game scoring honors for both teams in a 56-52 loss to Palomar.

Honorable mention went to Mt. San Jacinto baseball player Zach Fyfe, Palomar golfer Bryce Haynes and Palomar basketball player Aaron Roedl, who shared the AOTW award on Jan. 12.

Fyfe, a sophomore shortstop from Colton High School, went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored and had a part in turning double plays in both the eighth and ninth innings as the Eagles opened their baseball season with a 2-1 victory over Saddleback.

Roedl, a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard from Temecula’s Great Oak High School, scored 27 points and hit the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to beat San Diego City 79-77.

Haynes, a freshman from San Pasqual High School, medaled with a 3-under 69 at the historic, 108-year old Victoria Club in Riverside as the Comets placed sixth out of 13 teams in the Riverside Invitational hosted by Riverside City College.
