Guided Pathways is a framework designed to advance student completions by offering clear educational paths that integrate student services, counseling, and academic support for the student.
Guided Pathways is the impetus we need to enact change in a system that needs changing. The California Community College system was created to provide open access to all who wanted an education. California Community Colleges accept 100% of students who apply, but fall short in making sure students reach their desired goals. At SWC, we want to close achievement gaps and create opportunities for ALL students to successfully achieve their educational and career goals. Our Jaguar Paths will build on successful efforts already underway by scaling these to expand success to all students. The College’s goals will include a redesign in structure, culture, policies, procedures, and processes related to onboarding, scheduling, retention, student learning, and assessment to ensure students identify the best paths, and have the support and momentum needed to complete their goals.
Our collective promise to students is to provide them access, available support, and exceptional instruction in programs that promote an upwardly mobile pathway to success. We pledge to make ourselves available to meet our students as they come to us, and help them achieve their educational goals.
The College constituency will reexamine every facet of the institution to identify structural barriers that impede or prevent the success of our students and invest in equity-minded, collaborative and aligned, policies, practices, and behaviors that lead to the success of ALL students.
The Jaguar Paths will focus on four main elements:
- Creating clear curricular pathways through program mapping;
- Helping students choose and enter their pathways through better information on careers;
- Helping students remain on their paths through responsive student support in counseling; and
- Ensuring learning through intentional student outcomes.
Guided Pathways key elements that SWC will address over the next 18-months includes:
- Cross-functional inquiry;
- Integrated planning;
- Guided majors and career exploration;
- Realigning and integrating basic skills/developmental education classes.
